Time and time again in times of personal and national crisis, we are shown in the Word of God that God’s leaders called the people of God to fast (Judges 20:26; I Samuel 7:6; Ezra 8:21; Nehemiah 1:4; 9:1; Esther 4:3, 15; Daniel 9:3; Joel 1:14; 2:12, 15; Jonah 3:5; Matthew 17:21). If there was ever a time in our generation for such a call it is most certainly NOW. So, in the Spirit of that precedent and with a spirit of humility before God, I humbly call you to fast with us. Let’s fast from eating together for at least 12 hours, Midnight to Noon, [more if you are led and are in the health to do so (please consult your doctor if there is any question in your mind)]. Of course, please be led by The Spirit as to the nature of your fast, but be sure that it is indeed led by The Spirit and it is something so integral to your life, like food, that you truly feel the impact of the void that it leaves. This is not time to fast something that is just “healthy eating” like sweets, rather something of substance in your diet or lifestyle.
While what you give up during a fast is important and you should feel that “void” in your schedule and stomach, it is what you take on in filling that “void” that matters most. Namely, we ought to fill that time and space with time with the Lord in the form of disciplines like: prayer, praise, worship, study of God’s Word, or generosity of time or talents and witnessing to the glorious gospel of a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. God through the prophet in Isaiah 58 sets the standard for fasting and I urge you to read it and meditate upon its implications for your life as we enter this season together. Also, I exhort you to keep in mind the standard that The Lord Jesus set in Matthew 6:16-18.
If we answer this call to fasting and seeking the Lord, then we can expect all of the promises of God that He has said and has demonstrated in times past on behalf of those who respond accordingly in times of crisis to the praise of His glory in Christ Jesus.
“If My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves, and prayer and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
II Chronicles 7:14
Please check back as I plan to post “DEVOTIONS” to add to your own personal times with the Lord to help unify us through this season (see link below and on the HOME page).
Thank you for your openness and responsiveness to the call of The Spirit in this hour. For “we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).
With Love and Shalom in Christ,
